What to put on a rent receipt
- The date you received the payment and the amount.
- Who paid, and the rental address and unit.
- The rent period the payment covers.
- How it was paid (cash, check number, money order and so on).
- Any balance still owed.
- Your name, title and signature.
When a receipt is required
Rules depend on your state and city. In New York, for example, Real Property Law section 235-e requires a landlord who receives rent in cash or any form other than the tenant's personal check to give a written receipt showing the date, the amount, the rental unit and period the payment covers, and the signature and title of the person who received it. Check your own state and local law, and give a receipt for every cash payment even where it is not required.
